Pre-eminent 19th century British author, died at age 58. ALS "Charles Dickens", 4.5x7, Nov 13 1849, Devonshire Terrace to Irish antiquarian Thomas Crofton Croker, declining Croker's invitation, in part: "I am most unfortunately in the filling-up...For on Wednesday the 21st I preside at a public dinner of the Newsvendors’ Benevolent Institution and (for that day) feel is no other hope in me...", custom framed & matted with sepia-toned portrait photo overall size 7.25x14.5 Of historical note, Dickens was a great supporter of charities & social causes, particularly those that benefitted the poor, as Dickens’s father was incarcerated in a debtor’s prison when Dickens was young. Also of note, Croker (1798-1854) was an Irish antiquarian & specialist in Irish fairytales, best known for his collection of fairytales Fairy Legends and Traditions of the South of Ireland
