One of the most senior general officers in the Confederate Army, earlier career United States Army officer, serving with distinction in the Mexican-American War & Seminole Wars. ALS "J.E. Johnston", 4.5x6.75, Jan 4 1891 to Major General Butterfield with wonderful content, in part: "...It gratifies me very highly by the compliment intended for me and the agreeable manner in which you did so. I shall treasure the gift...", custom matted with portrait engraving & biographical info overall size 16x12. Of historical note, this is one of the last Johnston ALSs extant, as he died shortly after writing it, on March 21 1891, after marching in the funeral procession of his old adversary, General Sherman
