American playwright, screenwriter, novelist, only individual to have won three solo Academy Awards for Best Screenplay (the other three-time winners, Francis Ford Coppola, Charles Brackett, Woody Allen & Billy Wilder, shared their awards with co-writers), died at age 58 of cancer, for which he had declined surgery. SCARCE ALS "Paddy Chayefsky", 7.25x10.5, Oct 31 1980 mentioning his Academy Award winning screenplay "Marty", adding "I can't take any lines from it to quote - But this is a handwritten note, and I hope it will do."
